Need
Due to the province’s rapid growth, more new electricity generation capacity is required. Because electricity cannot be effectively stored, Alberta’s electrical system requires quick-start “peaking” facilities to provide electricity during peak times of power demand.
As a rapid-response, natural gas-fired facility, the Crossfield Energy Centre will help stabilize the province’s southern transmission grid.
Benefits
The Crossfield Energy Centre will offer a number of benefits including:
- a clean, reliable, cost-effective source of new electricity supply for southern Alberta;
- helping keep electricity costs as low as possible for ENMAX customers by reducing their exposure to volatile energy markets;
- helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions by reducing transmission line losses from the Alberta grid;
- enhancing local and regional reliability of power supply during peak demand periods;
- providing a high value use of this site as well as economic and industrial diversification for the MD of Rocky View; and
- offering a significant source of local tax revenue.
