The ENMAX group of companies’ (ENMAX) Corporate Responsibility (CR) report, entitled "Generating Success", is ENMAX’s third annual CR report and discloses data from January through December 2009. The 2008 CR report entitled “Empowering Communities” was released in May 2009. Our CR reports are prepared in alignment with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Third Generation (G3) Guidelines and in consideration of the Electric Utility Sector Supplement.
The ENMAX CR report addresses how our group of companies interacts with the environment, the economy and society at large. It has been developed for our diverse stakeholder audience, which includes customers, landowners, businesses, governments and employees who may be impacted by or have influence on our day to day operations and our capital project developments. Our CR report is designed to complement the financial disclosures we provide in our annual report.
Coordination of the CR report is a shared responsibility between ENMAX Corporation’s Environmental Affairs and Corporate Communications departments and content for the report is retrieved from various business units. We strive to ensure that the data we present is accurate and complete. At the beginning of each section, we include disclosures on our Management Approach for five of the categories required by the Global Reporting Initiative G3 Guidelines (GRI-G3).
In addition, we engaged PricewaterhouseCoopers in the preparation of the report to assure selected quantitative information in this report, including our internal carbon footprint, community investments and employee lost time and recordable injury rates. ENMAX self-declares this report a level B+ based on the criteria for GRI Application Levels.
To determine what content is considered important to our stakeholders with respect to CR reporting, ENMAX held a half-day workshop with ten individuals representing seven stakeholder groups. These stakeholder groups included two municipal districts, retail and commercial customers, academia, community associations, two employees and two non-government organizations. A third-party consultant, Hemmera Environment Inc., was engaged to facilitate the workshop and lead an assessment of ENMAX’s 2008 CR report. Strengths and weaknesses were identified, with suggestions for improvement in each section. ENMAX acknowledges the valuable input of all members in this stakeholder committee and incorporated a number of their recommendations in this report. These same stakeholders will be engaged again in 2010 to provide feedback on our 2009 CR Report, following its publication.
The scope of this CR report includes ENMAX's Alberta-based operations and our B.C.-based operations. All financial data is presented in Canadian dollars, unless otherwise stated and all numerical data is presented using the metric system. The data and calculations provided in this report are sourced from various data storage systems and applications. Information that has been inputted over the course of the year is pulled from these systems. In some instances, estimations may be drawn based on best available information and records.
Corrections from the 2008 CR Report:
The 2008 reported value for our carbon footprint (internal greenhouse gas emissions, excluding generations) has been restated from 16,650 tonnes to 15,828 tonnes CO2e to reflect changes in the published emissions factors used for the calculations. Published emission factors are regularly updated by government bodies and the changes can be retroactive to prior years. In the current year, we adopted a reporting policy to use the same emissions factors for a period of three years and have chosen 2008 as our base year. Sources for emission factors are listed under Carbon Footprint Reduction of Environmental Proctection.
