C. Energy Consumption and Efficiency

Our commitment to environmental sustainability finds prominent expression where we work. ENMAX's current corporate headquarters is located in a re-purposed warehouse in Calgary, which is one of the largest EcoLogo™ certified office spaces in Canada. To attain this designation, the facility had to meet strict requirements, focusing on energy efficiency and energy reduction initiatives. For example, the building maximizes the use of natural daylight in its design and is equipped with motion/occupancy light sensors and mechanical controls to reduce or turn off room lighting/heating when unoccupied. The improvement in facilities, as well as increased employee awareness, has enabled us to stabilize, and in some cases reduce, energy consumption levels, despite workforce growth.

EcoLogo™ is a voluntary standard and certification program run under the auspices of the federal government. Its intent is to help reduce GHG emissions by encouraging companies to adopt sustainable building practices, materials and energy-efficient systems into their office environments.

Energy Efficiency Programs

Increasing awareness about the importance of energy efficiency is a responsibility we approach with enthusiasm. We recently re-launched a section of our website focusing on renewable energy and energy conservation, providing tips and videos for the public on simple ways to reduce energy consumption in the home. The site includes a number of calculators to show the energy or emissions saved by switching to renewable energies and compact fluorescent lights.

In 2007, ENMAX Corporation created an energy-wise awareness program for our own employees to help build their energy efficiency knowledge, with the theme, "What's a Watt Worth?". The program focused on the use of energy meters that employees signed out and used to evaluate the energy consumption of various appliances and devices around their homes. We also extended the availability of energy meters to educational institutions and customers.

During 2007, a series of compact fluorescent lights were made available for purchase by employees through our own online store, offering 13 top-grade CFL models for every part of the home, as another way to highlight the importance of simple, easy-to-do measures that make a meaningful difference when it comes to reducing energy use.
