At ENMAX, being responsible is a core value. A key component of that value is environmental stewardship towards protecting the air, land and water that we all share. ENMAX is committed to environmental protection which includes conducting our activities in full compliance with regulations. In addition, we strive to minimize the environmental impacts associated with our activities and to continually improve upon our practices as technology and processes evolve.
ENMAX has summarized the five main commitments of its Environmental Policy in a PACCT to protect the environment, these are:
Prevention of pollution;
Awareness of Environmental Policy and environmental protocols;
Compliance with environmental laws, regulations and policies;
Continual improvement of environmental performance; and
Training to ensure competence and minimize environmental impacts.
In addition to these environmental commitments, ENMAX is committed to providing its customers with sustainable energy options. To this end, we’re working to make the prospect of electricity production more efficient and less harmful to the environment. For example, we’re introducing plans to bolster our generation portfolio with cleaner gas fired technologies. And we’re leading the way when it comes to evaluating many of the new and emerging technologies that will change how Albertans consume electricity and energy in the future. We believe that ENMAX is the company to bring this new thinking and more environmentally-friendly choices to Albertans.
Environmental Management System
ENMAX Corporation's environmental management system (EMS) conforms to the ISO 14001:2004 international standard for environmental management and to the
requirements of the Canadian Electricity Association's Environmental Commitment and Responsibility (ECR) Program. All ENMAX subsidiary companies participate in the corporate environmental system, which is used to develop and implement our environmental policy, to mitigate the environmental impacts of our work and to help us continually improve our environmental performance.
In 2007, ENMAX engaged a third-party auditor to conduct an assessment of how closely our EMS met with the ISO 14001:2004 standard, as well as to ensure that the system has been properly implemented and maintained. Between 2006 and 2007, the following improvements were noted:
- ENMAX's EMS is well developed and integrated into other business systems and practices.
- Significant improvements to the system have occurred over the past year.
- It is evident that communication and working relationships between business units and subsidiaries and Environmental Affairs have improved.
In addition to the EMS audit, in 2007 a Transportation of Dangerous Goods audit was conducted and, with the exception of some minor labeling issues, no non-compliances were identified.
Compliance
Operational controls, training, and regular audits enable ENMAX to ensure that all employees are conducting operations in a manner consistent with relevant environmental legislation, regulations, guidelines, policies and operating practices. In 2007, ENMAX's environmental performance met all regulatory requirements and our company did not have any environmental contraventions.
