Local Purchasing Criteria

The benefit of buying locally from Alberta suppliers where possible and economically viable is one of the criteria we apply when issuing Requests for Proposals (RFPs). It not only makes sense to take advantage of the plentiful expertise evident in our province, but using local suppliers also reduces the amount of shipping required for the large volume industrial purchases we make, such as copper wire and electrical equipment. This, in turn, reduces greenhouse gas emissions and boosts the economic impact of our spending within Alberta.

Green Procurement Policy Implementation in 2008

ENMAX is currently in the process of developing a green procurement policy in 2008, in recognition of the fact that the total life cycle cost of the goods we purchase must be carefully considered and factored into our purchasing decisions. For example, we recycle large amounts of scrap metal such as copper wiring, and recognize the responsibility we have to ensure that if it is shipped overseas, it is handled in a responsible manner. Similarly, we seek the best options for safely recycling treated wood poles and old batteries that we accumulate.

Investments & Contributions

In 2007, ENMAX paid dividends of $50 million to our sole shareholder, the City of Calgary. The same amount was paid in 2006 and ENMAX expects to pay a similar amount in 2008.

In addition, our company contributed more than $4.7 million to communities across Alberta through our annual community investment and sponsorship programming.
