A Growing Renewables Portfolio
ENMAX is Alberta's leading supplier of clean, renewable energy. Our portfolio includes:
- 50% interest in the 75 MW McBride Lake wind farm
- 100% ownership of the 80 MW Taber wind farm
- 99% ownership of the 11 MW Furry Creek run-of-river hydro generation facility, located in Squamish, B.C.
- plans to build a 20 MW run-of-river hydro generation project in the Clowhom area of B.C.
- plans to build a 12 MW waste-heat recovery generation facility in B.C.
In 2008, ENMAX Energy is advancing the development of natural gas fired generation in southern Alberta including the 120 MW Crossfield Energy Centre "peaker" facility, and the 1,000 MW Shepard Energy Centre.
The proposed ENMAX Shepard Energy Centre will use clean and efficient combined cycle turbine technology. Natural gas is burned in state-of-the-art combustion turbines that will produce both electricity and heat. The heat is then captured to produce even more electricity through a steam turbine. The facility will be using advanced natural gas technology and will produce less than half the carbon dioxide (CO2) per MW of conventional coal plants.
Measuring Environmental Risk
In 2007, the Government of Alberta passed Alberta's Specified Gas Emitters Regulation to address greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from certain facilities. Effective July 1, 2007, facilities emitting more than 100,000 tonnes of GHG per year are required to reduce their emissions intensity from a baseline figure. Companies responsible for these facilities will be given a number of options to enable them to comply with this requirement, including making operational improvements, buying eligible offsets to apply against emissions, and contributing to a fund established for the purpose of investing in technology to reduce GHG in Alberta. ENMAX's management is currently assessing the impact these regulations may have on our business as a result of our coal-fired thermal generation interests in Alberta, including the offsets that may be available to minimize our exposure through owned wind projects.
