Waste and Materials Management

ENMAX Power’s operations within Calgary involve a range of activities from installing new power poles and transformers to pulling old underground transmission lines out for replacement.

Some of the materials ENMAX Power purchased for construction purposes are shown in the table below:

Materials Used by Weight (Tonnes)

Materials Used by Weight (Tonnes)

As a result of ENMAX Power's construction activities the following waste streams were created and either disposed of in a landfill, incinerated or recycled. ENMAX Power's waste tracking excludes construction activities associated with large projects contracted to a third-party, such as building power plants. Best practices in waste management are expected of all our contractors.

Total Weight of Waste by Type and Disposal Method (Tonnes)

Waste Type and Disposal Method 2008 2009
Total Recycled Solids 662 613
Total Recycled Contaminated Solids 17 12
Total Waste to Landfill 2263 4042
Solid Waste Incinerated 1.9 1.6
Total Recycled Liquid Wastes 99 163.6
Liquid Waste Incinerated 0.5 0.6

Note: This table includes waste generated by ENMAX Power's operations in Calgary and includes both construction and office waste but excludes recycled bottles and cans which are recycled from ENMAX offices.

The majority of the solid waste to landfill is comprised of clean or contaminated soil that is removed during construction operations from pole installations to transformer spill remediation. In 2009, 3,555 tonnes of soil was recorded as being transported to landfills, an increase of 2,226 tonnes over the 1,329 tonnes of soil landfilled in 2008. This increase was mainly due to an improvement in record keeping. As of January 1, 2009, the City of Calgary mandated that all soil be quantified and tested for contaminants. As a result, ENMAX's record keeping for soil disposal to landfill improved substantially.

Transformers and cables that are removed from service are filled with oil, which needs to be drained and either reused or recycled. In 2009, ENMAX Power reused approximately 45,502 litres and recycled 130,750 litres of oil, which is much like mineral oil. This makes up the majority of the total recycled liquid waste listed in the table above.
