Energy Efficiency
Demand side management (DSM) is the electricity industry's term for the efforts we make to reduce total demand for electricity, as well as shift demand from peak periods to other times of the day. Reducing total demand for electricity helps the entire provincial grid operate more efficiently and reduces the need for new power plants and transmission lines and the size and complexity of integrated electricity systems.
In 2009, ENMAX participated in the development of two discussion papers commissioned by the Alberta Energy Efficiency Alliance, a multi-sector organization focused on advancing energy efficiency in the province. The first – The Alberta Energy Efficiency Act – is a summary of the importance the role legislation plays in encouraging energy efficiency mechanisms. The second paper, Energy Efficiency in the Provincial Building Code, looks at approaches other jurisdictions have taken to incorporate energy efficiency into their building codes as possible models for Alberta to follow.
