Reducing our carbon footprint

ENMAX is committed to reducing our carbon footprint. Examples of a few small steps we are taking include adding hybrid vehicles to our fleet and encouraging our employees to turn off their ignitions when vehicles are not in use.

ENMAX’s Hybrid Vehicles

Investing in hybrid vehicles has its advantages including fewer carbon emissions and reduced fuel consumption. This has led us to introduce 28 gasoline Hybrid vehicles to our fleet through a combination of Ford Escapes and Chevrolet Silverados.

Most recently, our fleet has expanded to include the first hybrid utility bucket truck in Calgary. The hybrid bucket truck’s 45 foot aerial device has a 60 per cent improved fuel economy in utility applications compared to the aerial devices on traditional utility trucks. The efficiency comes from the aerial device’s ability to operate off of the truck’s battery for up to 20 minutes.

The addition of hybrid vehicles to our fleet has resulted in a six per cent reduction of fuel use. We plan to increase our hybrid fleet as current fleet vehicles retire.

New Idle-free Zone

Recognizing that vehicle idling contributes to pollution, greenhouse gases, and wastes fuel; we launched an Idle-Free Zone campaign. We installed Idle-Free signs at locations around ENMAX buildings, garages and substations to remind employees and members of the public to turn off their vehicles while in park. Simply turning a key will reduce sending emissions into the air and thereby contribute to the reduction of our carbon footprint
