Need some advice about how to choose your retail supplier of electricity? Our consumer information will answer your questions in an unbiased manner and direct you to Government of Alberta information?
1. Where can I find information to help me decide which combination of price, service and features best meets my needs?
The Government of Alberta can provide you with information to help you decide which electricity options are best for your needs. A leaflet called "How To Shop For Electricity" is available on the government's Customer Choice website or by calling the government's toll free number at 310-4455 and asking for Government Services. You can also call ENMAX at (403) 310-2010 (toll-free in Alberta) and we will direct you to this information. To protect consumers, licensing, bonding and codes of conduct apply to retailers.
2. I've been called and asked to send a copy of my electricity bill to another company. What is this for? Should I send it to them? And what kind of information can they get from my bill?
Retail companies may be interested in finding out how much electricity you consume and when. These companies are trying to estimate how much electricity a particular customer, neighborhood or city use over a certain time. You can share this information which anyone you choose. Your bill will show the company your name, address, amount owing, account number and water and electricity consumption patterns.
3. Who should I contact if I have questions or concerns?
Your utility bill will have phone numbers on the back. Your electricity supplier will also send you information and contact numbers. If you would like us to help you understand your electric information and rates, please phone us at (403) 310-2010 (toll-free in Alberta) or e-mail us.
4. What is the Market Surveillance Administrator?
The Market Surveillance Administrator ("MSA") is an independent body created under the Electric Utilities Act to help ensure the fair, efficient and openly competitive operation of Alberta's electricity markets. The Code of Conduct Regulation governs aspects of the retail electricity market, including the conduct of owners of electric distribution systems and affiliated retailers. Any person who feels that a contravention of this Regulation has occurred may submit a complaint to the MSA, by following the process set out in section 51 of the Act. Copies of this Act and Regulation may be obtained through the Queen's Printer (Alberta). The MSA can be reached by telephone at (403) 705-3181. For additional information with regard to the MSA, please visit their website at www.albertamsa.ca.
